Financial planning built by a barrister, for barristers.

Whether you are about to become a tenant or are preparing for your KC appointment, taking an extended period away from the Bar, or ultimately preparing for retirement we are here to guide you every step of the way.

bringing Transparency to life at the bar

Kate Traynor, now an established practising barrister, spent the early years of her career without access to financial guidance that reflected the realities of life at the Bar. Like many of her peers, she encountered advisers who were capable but generalists who were unable to address the irregular income, structural complexity, and professional pressures of self-employed practice.

Halesworth & Hurlston was built to address that gap.

We have created a financial planning service designed specifically for barristers: one that reflects how you earn, how you think, and how your careers evolve.

Our mission is straightforward to bring transparency to life at the Bar, equipping barristers at every stage of their career with the clarity, tools, and guidance needed to build financially secure and rewarding professional lives.

questions we help answer

I have not been self-employed before, how do I look after my finances?
Becoming self-employed and starting life at the bar can be both exciting and overwhelming.

By understanding where you are today and where you want to get to, we can build you a personalised plan to ensure your finances are setup for success,
Am I on the right track?
It is easy to feel lost and uncertain about your financial future.

We can help you understand what steps you need to take to ensure you are on the right track.
How can I prepare for a King's Counsel appointment?
Taking silk requires years of dedicated hard and intelligent work.

The selection criteria and application process alone usually require a significant amount of money. On becoming KC there will likely be significant changes to our earnings.
Are my investments working for me?
We conduct thorough evidence-based analysis of your existing investments and provide you with the findings on whether they are appropriately invested to meet your long term goals, and where you can make adjustments to improve the likelihood of success.
How do I look after myself and my family if I become unwell and I am unable to work?
We see more often than not how an unexpected illness or accident can have severe unintended consequences for you and your family, we help put protective measures in place to limit harm.
When can I retire?
We help you get clarity on when you can retire, the impact of reducing your practising hours, and how to make your money last.

how we support the bar

Financial wellbeing clinics

We work with Chambers, Inns of Court, bar associations, and Bar Training Course (BTC) providers to improve financial preparedness, alleviating financial stress, and providing practical guidance.

Following our financial clinics we always provide members with the opportunity to book a no-obligation, one-on-one discussion regarding their personal circumstances.

Private Client

Our tailored services are designed are tailored to the relevant stage of your life at the bar. Whether you have recently entered your second six and are looking to establish your personal finance foundations, seeking King's Counsel appointment and wondering how it may impact your finances, or are looking to wind-down from full practice.

Personal finance foundations

Taking the feedback from junior barristers across sets and practice areas we are developing a CPD-eligible, modular course to provide members of the bar with the knowledge and tools to manage their personal finances independently.
